You may have heard the phrase, "Painting is Dead" tossed around in artsy conversations. Well- no worries.. not true. Here's a great article from the NYT by critic Roberta Smith that discusses why it is as valid as ever!
This work asks us to consider how we attach value or preciousness to an object. How does the simple act of placing a plaque next to a dandelion elevate the plant and the event of its growth from a common weed to something of value?
... well.. the list is long but one of the options is to work as an art handler- or preparator- for a museum/ gallery or private collector. The perks are networking within the field, getting to see works of art in person and a schedule that allows time to work in your studio. Now.. you could even participate in the Art Handling Olympics!!!
The U.S. Postal Service is releasing a new set of stamps featuring the works of Abstract Expressionist masters!!! Besides the obvious excitement I feel about this.. I am really excited about the idea that art becomes accessible to the public through a project like this! It is such a Warholian idea born out of a Pop Art approach, yet using the elitist, personal imagery of AbEx! It is great to think that someone who has never seen these works before may have their interests raised by simply receiving a letter with one of these stamps on it!
My friend, artist Garth Johnson, has a pretty fabulous blog called Extreme Craft. If you have a few hours to kill, you will enjoy every single moment of perusing his posts!!! In reading Extreme Craft, I learned about artist Carrie Reichart. She takes art + activism to the public through her incredible tile mosaic graffiti murals! You can see more here.
If you haven't had the pleasure of seeing a Julie Mehretu piece in person, I encourage you to keep an eye out for the chance as the photos just pale in comparison!
Here is a great interview with her studio assistants via Art:21! Enjoy!!!
“If you want to get into graffiti, you should pay attention to this!”
